On 9 December on the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day the UCLG World Council that took place in Hangzhou from 6-9 December 2017 endorsed the Hangzhou Statement to recall the vital role played by transparency, accountability and citizen engagement for efficient city management. International Anti-Corruption Day aims to raise awareness of the negative effect of corruption and the vital need to fight and prevent it.

As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability, UCLG is supporting the Urban-GLASS’s “Governing with the Citizen”, an initiative led by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and UN-Habitat to raise awareness of the need for local and regional governments to actively combat corruption.

“Governing with the Citizen” highlights that local governments are already fighting corruption around the globe.

On November 9, UCLG and Urban GLASS organized a side-event entitled "Fight corruption in cities: identify risks and react in time. The role of local governments" at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (COSP 2017). This was the first time that local governments formally participated in the framework of the COSP.

The side-event marked the start of the #Commit2Transparency campaign on social media in the lead up to International Anti-Corruption Day. The campaign aims to promote transparency and open governance and to highlight the role of local and regional governments in fighting corruption.
